Home: Cohouseholding Model: Co-responsible

3. Co-responsible

Cohouseholders are responsible for their household including:
  • Creation, operations, and dissolution.
  • Cooperative management of household budget.
  • Cooperative maintenance of their property.
  • Cooperative care for their neighborhood and neighbors.
The cohouseholding model embraces shared responsibility, power, and privilege. This provides a foundation for more economic and social sustainability.

Creation, operations, and dissolution.
  • Generally, cohousehold residents create cohouseholds, operate them, and dissolve them.
  • Planning impacts potential returns to residents for investments of time and money.

Cooperative management of household budget.
  • Cohouseholds have open books - available for review by all residents, owners and renters alike.
  • Decision-making about expenses is collaborative, e.g., residents decide how to "split" utility costs.

Cooperative maintenance of their property.
  • Cohouseholds are maintained by their residents.
  • As the cohousehold decides, maintenance may be done personally or contracted to outside parties.

Cooperative care for their neighborhood and neighbors.
  • Cohouseholds are aware of the broader neighborhood context.
  • Cohouseholds act responsibly, respecting their neighbors' rights.
